Self-Funded or Scholarship? Choosing Your Route to Study in Hungary for 2027/28
Apply for the Stipendium Hungaricum (SH) scholarship if your grades are strong and you can wait until June for a result. Apply self-funded if you need certainty or you will miss the January deadline. The two routes are not mutually exclusive: many Bangladeshi students apply for SH and prepare a self-funded application in parallel. SH covers tuition and gives about BDT 31,970 a month toward living costs, but competition is intense, and no official country-level acceptance rate is published.
How Do the Two Routes Compare?
At Study Hungary, we start every consultation with this comparison. The figures below come from the Tempus Public Foundation's official 2026/27 call for the scholarship side and from published university sources for the self-funded side. Taka conversions use 1 HUF = BDT 0.38198 (19 October 2026) and EUR 1 = BDT 137.41 (7 October 2026).
| Factor | Stipendium Hungaricum | Self-funded |
|---|---|---|
| Tuition | Free | Typically €1,200 to €5,000 a year (BDT 1.65 to 6.9 lakh); medicine and dentistry €12,000 to €16,000 (BDT 16.5 to 22 lakh) |
| Monthly stipend | HUF 43,700 (BDT 16,693), paid for 12 months | None |
| Housing | Free dormitory place, or HUF 40,000 a month (BDT 15,279) toward rent | You pay; some university dormitories are under €100 a month |
| Health insurance | Public healthcare plus supplementary cover up to HUF 65,000 a year (BDT 24,829) | You buy insurance; it is required for the permit |
| Travel | Not covered | Not covered |
| Programme choices | Up to 2, locked after the deadline | Any number; each university sets its own process |
| Selection | Nomination by the sending partner, then an institutional entrance exam with a minimum of 56 out of 100 | University admission, usually document-based |
| Last deadline | 15 January 2026, 2 p.m. CET | Set by each university |
| Results | From late June | Rolling, varies by university |
| Age limit | Born on or before 31 August 2008 (2026/27 call) | None stated |
The official call says the stipend only partly covers living costs, so you need additional funds even on a scholarship. Total monthly cash benefit is HUF 83,700, or about BDT 31,970, if you take the housing allowance and not a dormitory place.
Who Is Involved? The Bodies You Will Deal With
| Entity | Role in your application |
|---|---|
| Tempus Public Foundation | Runs the SH online application system and allocates places |
| Hungarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade | Signs the bilateral scholarship agreement with Bangladesh |
| Ministry of Education, Bangladesh | Acts as the sending partner that nominates Bangladeshi applicants |
| Host institutions such as Debrecen, Pécs, Szeged, BME, Óbuda and MATE | Run the entrance exams and admit you |
| Embassy of Hungary, Dhaka, and VFS Bangladesh | Visa stage (Bangladeshis are not on the visa-waiver list) |
| EnterHungary | Online residence-permit system |
| University Grants Commission, Bangladesh | Equates foreign degrees where needed |
Our Dhaka team sees the same mistake every cycle: students treat the two routes as one decision, when they are really two separate applications with different deadlines and different documents.
What Are Your Real Odds with Stipendium Hungaricum?
No official country-level acceptance rate is published, so you will see very different numbers online. Here is what is actually known.
- Global demand: The scholarship programme reported 80,000 applications for 2025/26, up 20% on the year before. The top sending countries were Pakistan, Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya and India.
- Global awards: A figure of about 5,500 scholarships (2023) circulates widely. If awards stayed near that level, 80,000 applications would imply roughly 7%. That is our own arithmetic on an unconfirmed award number, so treat it as an estimate.
- Bangladesh slots: A 2021 agreement gave Bangladesh 130 slots a year across levels (plus 30 for nuclear specialists) for three years. That agreement has expired, so the current quota is unconfirmed.
- Bangladesh applicants: One alumnus told The Business Standard (TBS News) that nearly 20,000 Bangladeshis applied in the year he described. If that is right, 130 slots would mean well under 1% on a slots-to-applicants basis. This comes from a single account, so it is a warning sign, not a statistic.
Our own explainer on the Stipendium Hungaricum acceptance rate shows the commonly quoted 8 to 10% estimate for Bangladesh. That figure has no cited source, and the two numbers cannot both be right. Plan as though your chances are low, even with strong results.
How the SH Process Works from Bangladesh
The official 2026/27 timeline is a useful guide, because the 2027/28 call is expected to open in November 2026 but has not been confirmed.
| Stage | 2026/27 timing |
|---|---|
| Application opens | 14 November 2025 |
| Deadline | 15 January 2026, 2 p.m. CET |
| Technical check | January to February |
| Nomination by sending partner | By end of February |
| Institutional entrance exams | March to May |
| Allocation | May to June |
| Results | From late June |
| Accept scholarship online | By 1 August |
| Enrol | By 30 September |
For Bangladesh, an alumnus describes a two-stage process: documents are first submitted offline through the Ministry of Education in Dhaka, usually after a circular around December, and then you apply online through the Tempus portal. Because that account is one person's recollection, confirm the current procedure on the Ministry's circular.
Eligibility and rules from the official call
- You must be a citizen of the country you apply through, and born on or before 31 August 2008 (for the 2026/27 call).
- Hungarian citizens, dual citizens, and persons with refugee or similar status are not eligible.
- You can select up to two programmes, and you cannot change them after the deadline.
- Files are uploaded in English, each a maximum of 4 MB.
- Required: online form with a recent photo, motivation letter (at least one page), school certificates and transcripts with translations, passport data page, and the online "Statement for Application".
- The medical certificate is not uploaded; you bring it to Hungary if you win.
- Hungarian-language programmes require B2 Hungarian or a mandatory one-year preparatory course. In year one you must pass a Hungarian-as-a-foreign-language exam by the end of the second semester, or the stipend may be cut to HUF 30,000 (BDT 11,459) a month.

How the Self-Funded Route Works
Self-funded students apply directly to the university, pay tuition, and arrange their own funds, insurance and housing. The Óbuda University visa guidance lists what a first-time self-financing applicant submits:
- Application form and a passport-size photo
- Full copy of a valid passport
- Admission document and proof of the paid tuition fee
- Transcript of records
- Bank balance statement or a sponsor letter
- Health insurance
- Accommodation report and contract
- Administrative fee and proof of language competency
Timings that matter: visa interviews can be booked up to 90 days before entry, you must enter Hungary within three months of visa approval or the visa and permit become invalid, and extensions are filed on EnterHungary 45 to 50 days before the permit expires. The university page states no minimum bank balance. A figure of about HUF 200,000 a month (BDT 76,396) is widely quoted, but treat it as approximate and confirm it with your university and the embassy. Our detailed guide to the Hungary student visa from Bangladesh walks through the steps.
What Does Each Route Cost in Year One?
| Scenario | Tuition | 12 months living | Year-one total | In BDT |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Self-funded, lower end | €1,200 | €4,500 (at €375/month) | €5,700 | 783,237 |
| Self-funded, upper end | €5,000 | €8,400 (at €700/month) | €13,400 | 1,841,294 |
| Self-funded, medicine | €12,000 to €16,000 | €4,500 to €8,400 | €16,500 to €24,400 | 2,267,265 to 3,352,804 |
| SH scholarship | Free | Partly covered by about BDT 31,970 a month | You cover the gap | Varies |
If you take the stipend for 12 months, that is HUF 524,400, or about BDT 200,300 a year. Tuition ranges are broad: Budapest University of Economics and Business lists business programmes at about €2,750 a semester (BDT 377,878), and Debrecen lists medicine at about USD 16,900 a year, so always check the specific programme. Our page on study in Hungary tuition fees covers fee detail by field.
Which Route Should You Choose?
| If you are... | Look first at |
|---|---|
| Strong GPA, able to wait until June | Apply for SH, and prepare a self-funded backup |
| On a tight budget but not top of your class | Self-funded at a lower-fee university |
| Applying for medicine or dentistry | Both: SH is highly competitive, and self-funded tuition is the biggest cost |
| Missed the January deadline | Self-funded |
| Needing a confirmed place before a certain date | Self-funded, because SH results come in June |
Can You Apply to Both?
Yes, and it is the approach we recommend for most applicants. Apply for SH by the January deadline, and keep a self-funded application with a Hungarian university in parallel. One caution: the official call restricts some former scholarship holders and certain self-financed students in Hungary (Section 2.2 of the call), so check that section if you have studied there before.
Common Mistakes
- Treating SH as a sure thing. With tens of thousands of applicants worldwide and a few hundred Bangladesh slots, it is not.
- Assuming SH pays for everything. The stipend and housing allowance only partly cover living costs, and travel is not covered.
- Locking in the wrong programme choices. You cannot change them after the deadline.
- Starting documents late. MOFA attestation, police clearance and UGC equation take time.
- Skipping the Hungarian course. The year-one Hungarian exam affects your stipend.
- Using 2026/27 dates for 2027/28. The next call is expected in November 2026 but not confirmed.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Stipendium Hungaricum fully funded?
It covers tuition and pays a stipend and housing support, but the official call says it only partly covers living costs and does not cover travel.
How much is the Stipendium Hungaricum stipend?
HUF 43,700 a month (about BDT 16,693) for Bachelor's and Master's students, plus a free dormitory place or HUF 40,000 (BDT 15,279) toward rent.
When does Stipendium Hungaricum open for 2027/28?
It is expected to open in November 2026, but the dates are not confirmed. Last year's deadline was 15 January.
What is the acceptance rate for Bangladeshi students?
No official figure is published. Estimates range from under 1% to 10%, so plan for low odds.
Can I study in Hungary without a scholarship?
Yes. Self-funded students pay tuition, typically €1,200 to €5,000 a year for most fields.
How much money do I need to show for a self-funded visa?
The university page states no minimum. About HUF 200,000 a month is widely quoted, so confirm with your university.
Can I apply for both?
Yes, with the caution about Section 2.2 of the call.
Do I need to speak Hungarian?
Not for English-taught programmes, but all SH students take a Hungarian-as-a-foreign-language course and exam in year one.
Conclusion
The choice is rarely scholarship or no scholarship. It is how to protect yourself against a low-probability, high-value outcome. Prepare the SH application early, keep a self-funded option alive, and build your budget in taka before you commit.
